Multi-Faceted Little Brown Pleggath

One of the most obvious things about this brown dragon is his size, he's quite small in both length and wingspan. His posture doesn't help in the slightest, he's hunched forwards as if he was crammed into a shell too small for him, as though he'd be longer if he had had a chance to grow properly. Perhaps the oddest part though are his head-knobs, overly large on his slightly knobbly head. In colouring, he's a riotous mix of browns, from the golden browns to the redder shades, in two different patterns. On his underside, from his chin to his tail tip, the areas of colour are small and uniform, almost like scales. The rest of it is a mess of uneven patchwork shapes, nothing if not bold.

Egg Name and Description

Reddened Crown Egg
A deep blood-red flows over the shell, thickest at the top as it trickles down to the base. From this, a pair of ivory spirals appear to sprout, like sea shells painted over the stain. The lower half of the shell is free of this overpowering red. There is mixture of subtle cloudy greys and rich terracotta browns, mingling, creeping up the shell, only to be driven back by a wave of red.

Hatching Message

Reddened Crown Egg is moving at quite the pace now, several cracks running up and down the shell. An erratic tapping sound emanates from the egg, as the dragon within starts hammering on the cracking shell. Suddenly, a talon bursts out of the egg, quickly tearing at the shell to create an opening large enough for the hatchling to escape.

Impression Message

All of a sudden the sands seem to recede, taking the unbearable heat with them. The chaos of eggs hatching and dragons wandering seems so far away. «Lanis?» A voice intrudes on the sudden calm, but it's not an unwelcome intrusion. Something about the voice is comforting, despite its unfamiliarity. «Lanis, are you hungry?» The voice brings with it a gnawing hunger. «I could eat.» The sands return with a whoosh, revealing the multi-faceted little brown sitting there, though the hunger remains. An introduction of sorts is the next order of business, and it goes as follows: «Hi. Pleggath. Food?»

Your Pleggath is honest, but in an interesting way. He won't out and out lie, but he will misrepresent the truth, where it serves his interest. To many, this would appear no different than lying. For example, if someone calls out to him from behind, he will still be able to say he has not /seen/ that someone. This may quickly become frustrating, as no amount of argument will persuade him to stop telling his creative truths. In the end, it will be up to Lanis to phrase the questions so as to get the whole truth, and this may take some practice. Of course, if he really doesn't want to answer, he will have a comeback for every situation, such as Rule #208: «Sometimes the only thing more dangerous than the question is an answer.»

His unique version of honesty is but one facet of his personality, he's also quite shallow. He's small for a brown, and he overcompensates somewhat. «Oh, that dragon's straps are magnificent, I must have them!» If he can't be big on size, he'll stand out by his straps, and his personality. And don't think you can get away with cheap dyes and trinkets, oh no, only the best for Pleggath! You may also find that he has an attraction to shiny things, particularly gold and similarly precious metals. He'll hoard all manner of metals and jewels away in his weyr, if Lanis will let him, and he'll be very possessive. «Why do you want to bring /who/ up to our weyr? No, no no no, I won't have it. They'll see my treasure!» Lanis will get her way in the end, her happiness is the one thing Pleggath values above his treasures, but he'll still discourage repeat visits. In short, he's self-conscious, and paranoid.

Growing up, the main thing will be curiousity. «What are those things on your feet? Toes? What are they for?» He's new to the world, and it fascinates him. He could stand to learn tact, though. «The rules say no sex, what /is/ sex?» And he won't exactly have any sense of timing, not in his earliest days. If a question occurs to him, at any time, he'll ask it. Which, given his evasive nature, is quite a double standard. Though he may grow out of this questioning phase, he'll never really learn politeness or other niceties, that's what Lanis is for! And she'll have a fair few ruffled feathers to smooth over, as Pleggath demonstrates a strong determination to get what he wants, with little regard for anyone else. While he may ask questions indiscriminately as a weyrling, he'll usually use that only as a last resort, «Lanis wouldn't tell me, what's lust?» and, by the time he's fully grown, he'll seldom talk to anyone but his rider. It's not that he's against socialising, he just doesn't have much of a need to talk to anyone else, and he'll only do so if there's a need.

In lessons, it will be between that your brown excels at, as his mind is his strongest asset. He'll be sure to always double check your images, and may wind up quizzing you on your destinations more often than not, this self-preservating element of curiousity never fading. Flying will be a strain, as he'll try to match the stamina of the larger browns and bronzes, while he's actually far closer to the blues. He'll often try to hide his agility, as it's a side-effect of his small size, and he'd rather people not notice that. The lesson he'll need the most practice at will be hunting, as he doesn't have much brute strength, so he'll need to find other ways to kill the beasts. He'll get it in the end, but don't be surprised if he often eats many smaller animals rather than a few larger ones.

Ahh, flights. He's far too small to ever have a hope of catching a gold, but he may still try. Glowing dragons remind him of his most precious treasures, gold and emeralds, thus, he must have them. His small size will be an asset in green flights, as he'll be more maneouverable, and willing to discard his self-conscious aspect for the duration of the flight. Hormones will take over, and he'll feel as if he's ten times the size he is, filled with confidence, energy, and lust. It may be overpowering for poor Lanis, but it will be exhilarating all the same.

Why did Pleggath choose Lanis? Well, simply put, she seemed to know her way around a tavern. There's definitely a streak of the gambler in him, he has an excellent poker face, but Lanis can see the truth behind it, most times. It doesn't hurt that he needs a conduit to the outside world, someone with manners, and hands (because he itches /terribly/, right behind his head knobs there), someone to apologise for his rudeness. The other reason is simple: he was lonely in that egg, and now he's not. He has his rider, and that's all he'll ever need. He adores Lanis more than anything, himself and his precious treasures included.

Pleggath's mind has changed subtly from the wisps of brown and grey in the shell, a third colour has been added, and has quickly risen to dominance. That colour is gold, shimmering and sparkling, ever present. The brown still pops up when he's feeling content, and the grey is quick to appear, storm clouds on the horizon, when he's upset or angry, but usually it's a solid gold, especially bright when he's in a good mood.

The clutch theme was the Zodiac, and Pleggath's Reddened Crown Egg was based on Aries. I specifically used the following, mixed with the ram aspect of the sign:
Clay lies still, but blood's a rover;
Breath's a ware that will not keep.
Up, lad: when the journey's over
There'll be time enough to sleep.
From: Reveille by A. E. Houseman, born March 26, 1859

For his personality, I drew from three sources: Your application, an Aries that I know, and this:
The spring equinox, March 21, is the beginning of the new zodiacal year and Aries, the first sign, is therefore that of new beginnings. The young ram is adventurous, ambitious, impulsive, enthusiastic and full of energy. The Arian is a pioneer both in thought and action, very open to new ideas and a lover of freedom. They welcome challenges and will not be diverted from their purpose except by their own impatience, which will surface if they don't get quick results.

His name, Pleggath, came from Plegg, inventor of the holosuite. And his description is based on this:

He's yours now, and you have free reign over what kind of dragon he ultimately becomes. Anything written here can be changed. Congratulations on impressing, and I hope you enjoy playing with Pleggath at Ista Weyr! :)
