Fallow brown creeps up the limbs of this lean and limber brown, like dried vines sprouting from the ground, using his body as a trellis. The muted hues branch outwards across his stomach, like flat leaves tickling his hide, curving around the shape of his torso, conforming to his thin sides. And yet, try as the fallow brown may it is unable to climb further, unable to overcome the bole hues that have settled themselves on his back, like heavy bark upon his body. Bole is what dominates his long, thin neck, growing heavy over his long, almost pointed headknobs, while khaki is what dominates his muzzle, giving him an aged look well before his time as it tickles his nostrils and chin. Rich cordovan - almost burgundy - dyes his ridges as they work their way back down his back, a wealthy addition to his otherwise neutral coloration, a hue that is carried to the tip of his long, lean tail without spreading. Even his wings lack particular emphasis, as tan sails stretch between fallow and bole-spotted spars, khaki speckles here and there along their large expanse. And yet, despite his lean appearance, there's a certain strength inhabiting his form, emphasized in the smooth, clean lines of his body.
Egg Name and Description
Use The Force Egg
Putrid swamp green clings to this shell, coating each and every spot upon it in the color of rotting foliage, the sheer drab color seeming to evoke a particularly horrid smell. Wisps of foggy gray seem to rise from the surface, spinning this way and that before they are caught and dispelled by the gray-green branches that create a dark canopy, fingerlike appendages creeping outwards. And yet, there's a bright spot - a streak of neon green - that seems to disappear as soon as it's noticed on one side of the shell.
Use the Force Egg suddenly ceases sinking, ceases moving. And then, suddenly, the shell is no more, the pieces pushed outwards as if pushed by a significant blast from within. And, rather than an egg, a brown hatchling is left in its place, slowly uncurling and straightening up.
Hues of tan and slate, a ribbon of dull copper, a tinge of olive gather together, pushing against your mind, gently at first. Weighing. Testing. The pressure is slowly increased, the dull palette expanding, before it suddenly seems to burst, enveloping your mind, and adding a new dimension to your very thoughts. « Zip. » The voice says slowly. « Zip. I your Adereth am, and you my Zip are. We together will be, and we great will be. » A flash of red appears, quickly stifled by neon blue, before there's a more sheepish admittance. « May I first eat? »
"Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive, and it is only by this meeting that a new world is born." -Anais Nin
From the very first moment that your mind meets Adereth, everything will change. Nothing that has been said could have prepared you for the difference; nothing that could have been shared would have showed you the extent of it. But, now with Adereth at your side, the world is your sandbox, and what a big world it is. Adereth will be the greatest friend you could ever ask for - he'll be supportive and comforting, adding insight that he's gained from others and giving him the impression of being wise beyond his years. At the same time, however, he'll let you make your own mistakes, and be there to help pick up the pieces when it doesn't go as you may have planned. He'll be there to help you understand the new you, and to make sure you are both the best that you can be.
"Friendship is one mind in two bodies." -Mencius
From the shell, it will feel that you've known Adereth forever - that you were always meant to find each other, and now that you have, everything is right. Adereth is patient and caring, he'll be your rock, and he'll share everything with you, while he expects you to share everything with him in turn. « Zip, why worry you so? You so happy should be! » His mind will always have a gentle embrace for you, and he'll always be there no matter what. Should he be spending his time somewhere else, talking to one of his clutchmates or another, he'll stop what he's doing at the drop of a mark to return to your side, with a polite excuse to the other. « Dhonzayth, my Zip me needs. We talk later will. » And then he'll be back there to comfort you as long as you need him.
"Write down the advice of him who loves you, though you like it not at present." -Proverb
Despite his youthfulness, from the beginning Adereth will be offering advice. Many times, he won't understand the implications of it, but he'll continue to share. On a night that you may wish to linger with your fellow classmates longer than you should, he'll gently remind you that there are, indeed, early lessons to be had in the morning, and that perhaps you should consider otherwise. And yet, in the end, he'll never push the issue - if you wish to stay, he'll let you stay, even if you are the receiving end of a few disapproving looks. In the end, though, he'll be there to keep you awake the next day, and gently remind you of what you're suppose to be doing, and there'll never be an 'I told you so' from him. But, it is not only you that he'll be offering bits of advice to, throughout weyrlinghood and beyond, but his classmates, and the others of the Weyr as well. « Tieth, you so much shouldn't eat! You will a belly ache get! » Of course, he'll leave it up to them to listen or not as they will, but you'll likely get a running commentary on the consequences, so that you will remember should you ever face a similar situation.
"A friend is someone who understands your past, believes in your future, and accepts you just the way you are."
At first, Adereth will ask many questions, and expect many answers. However, no matter what the answer is, he'll never sound disappointed, or lament a decision that you've made. Instead, it's merely for curiosity's sake, and to better understand who you are, and who you want to become. He'll stand behind you, and help you achieve your dreams, no matter what they are. He'll be there to practice drills again and again if you wish to be the best, he'll help you find out what you need to know, in order to advance. But, he'll never make the decisions for you - to him, you're perfect just the way you are.
"To become truly great, one has to stand with people, not above them." -Charles de Montesquieu
Adereth is not overly ambitious, nor does he have dreams of grandeur, and to those that do, he'll often have a soft reminder. « Sisketh, you must your place remember » With only those few words, he'll return to his own business, letting the others continue on the path that they chose, for better or for worse. Adereth, however, will always be one in which goodness and righteousness prevails, and while the others may chose greed or personal greatness, he'll be the fair one, and he'll expect the same of you. After all, only by doing that can one truly be great, by being good.
"One day your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure its worth watching."
While internally, Adereth is a very reserved dragon and a steady rock upon which you may always lean, his energy must go somewhere. And, go somewhere it does. Adereth is a very active dragon, and he loves to be on the go, doing this or that, and it's always with a hop, a skip, or a jump that he goes. Even when he's still, there's something moving, whether it's a gentle furling and unfurling of his wings, or the tip of his tail twitching back and forth at a quick pace. He's a very physical dragon, and enjoys playing with you, or the other dragons of the Weyr in games of tag, or anything else that can be thought of. But, win or lose, its all about the fun for him. He'll love taking the time to try new tricks both on the ground and in the air, to show off what his lithe body can do, and generally experiencing new things, no matter how old he gets. It's a big, wide world out there, just waiting for the two of you to explore it.
When it comes to flights and chasing, Adereth will not feel the need to chase every pretty girl that happens to rise where he is. Should you not wish to be involved, he'll honor your wishes, and stay grounded, watching the group taking to the dizzying heights overhead, and spend his time with you - his true love - instead. However, those times that he does take chase, it's with speed and eagerness, and his active nature will be used to his advantage. He'll happily engage in whatever tricks the lady may choose - spins and spirals, loops and dives, taking all in stride, simply letting his actions prove his desire. There'll be no eloquent monologues to a green beauty from this young man, nor any pleading to choose him. He'll accept their decision, and should it not be in his favor, he'll merely return to your side, content to have you.
"In good times and bad times, I'll be on your side for ever more that's what friends are for."
Adereth loves you for you, and no matter what may come, he'll be there for you in a way that no one else can. He'll do his best by you, as long as you do your best by him, and together the world is your playground.
Generally, Adereth's mind is full of muted tones, preferring the natural hues of khaki and slate, olive and sand, each tone blending in with those around it. However, with his changing moods, spikes of neon red or a sudden ribbon of fluorescent blue will suddenly peak in his thoughts, fighting for dominance, for a foothold. And yet, the red never wins out, never conquers, temptation and frustration always held at bay, kept confined by the blue, defeated by good. His voice is a soft baritone, calm, collected, and bringing with it a clean scent, a crisp scent, with just a hint of sweetness to it, despite the rather drab colors that tend to inhabit his thoughts, with an occasional hint of something else - a fleeting smell that is unidentifiable, but greatly comforting all the same. When he talks, however, he has the tendency to shift his words this way and that, his sentence structure never precisely normal, though what he means is certainly clear enough in the end.
Congratulations Zip! We're so happy to have you here with us at Ista, and we're so happy that we get to keep you! We hope that you enjoyed your candidacy, and that you enjoy weyrlinghood and beyond!
The theme this cycle was Jim Henson's 'Muppets', and the Use the Force Egg was based off of Star Wars' character Yoda. While Yoda was not technically made by Jim Henson Studios, they did provide elaborate consultation for his creation. Also, similar techniques were used to create Yoda as were used with the Muppets, so we felt he'd fit right in.
The Use the Force Egg itself was based on the first scene in which Yoda was introduced on screen - the Degohba swamp in which a young Luke lands, his X-wing begins to sink in the muck. This same swampiness carried through his mind, while Yoda's own age and wisdom were the inspiration for his mindname.
As for Adereth himself, he has touches of Yoda in him - in his wisdom and advice, his role as a mentor to Zip. But, he's also more - simply a best friend, and companion, through thick and thin. Adereth's name comes from the Hebrew name 'Aderes' which means Protector, which seems appropriate, all things considered.
However, as always, Adereth is yours, and yours to play as you wish, and he's what you make him. Everything here is just ideas that I've had while working on him.
