Description
Renalys has dark brown hair that reaches the middle of her back in haphazard layers. Choppy, side-swept bangs frame her oval face and large brown eyes. She has a straight nose and soft, shapely lips. While they are fairly attractive, Renalys' features are not very expressive, making it difficult to tell how she's feeling at times. Her hands, however, give away a bit more of her inner dialogue, with frequent finger tapping, scratching, and nail-biting. Ren's body has a fairly hourglass silhouette, however her bust is proportionately smaller than her bottom and hips. The sun has significantly bronzed her skin and dotted her face and shoulders with freckles. Standing at 5'8, she isn't terribly tall, but her fit figure makes her seem a little more so. Though she doesn't mean it, Renalys' gait is quite feminine and attractive, though she's not always the most graceful of individuals otherwise.
Not too interested in fashion trends, Ren likes to wear whatever is comfortable. At temperatures above 75 degrees, her outfit of choice would be loose-fitting shorts that reach her mid-thigh, along with a soft sleeveless shirt with a low scoop neck and an open-shouldered back(racerback). These shirts are the only item in her wardrobe that are fitted. At temperatures below 75 degrees, Ren will quickly don a loose, wool pullover over her usual shirt. She’ll then pair that with soft, loose-fitting pants, which are purposefully a few inches too long so that they can cover some of her feet. She always sews two pairs of buttons on each side of the pant legs; one set six inches from the bottom, and the other a foot from the bottom. Then, with two small slits at the hem of each pant leg, she can easily adjust the length of her pants when the time calls for it. As for footwear, Renalys will walk around barefoot whenever she can. However, she does own a pair of boots, walking shoes, and sandals for whenever they’re necessary. Ren will usually have her hair down, but if it’s hot enough she won’t hesitate to put it up in a ponytail. All of her clothing items, from her hair ties down to her footwear, are mostly neutral and dark colors; her favorites are black, any shade of grey, dark to grey blue, and browns.
History
Renalys was born in Ista Hold, in winter, to Journeyman Tanner Karrys, and Renala; the latter came from a prominent SeaCrafting family, but instead made jewelry which has become fairly popular amongst the Hold females.
Ren had a rather uneventful childhood. She was an only child until she was three, when her sister Kala was born. She enjoyed her little sister's company, despite Kala's incessant whining and tantrums. When Kala turned six, Renalys tried to teach her how to help her father in tanning, as she had done for turns now, but the bratty girl wrinkled her nose at the terrible smell the tanning process produced, and refused to have anything to do with it. This was fine with Ren, really, since she enjoyed spending time alone with her father. He would tell her stories from his childhood, none of which were terribly exciting, but she was entranced by them all the same. Her relationship with her mother was less intense. She didn't feel like jewelry making was a worthwhile endeavor in any way, and quickly forgot any lessons or skills her mother attempted to impart upon her eldest daughter. Fortunately, once Kala came a long, and so violently rejected her father's line of work, Renala was satisfied with the tutelage of her second-born instead.
As she matured the age children usually leave their homes to apprentice at Halls of their liking, Ren realized that her parents expected her to become a tanner like her father, since she was so apt for it. However, the thought of doing it for the rest of her life was suddenly worrying. Luckily, Renalys did have one other interest; creatures. Living on Ista Island, Ren was surrounded by sea life at all times, as well as the few runners and heardbeasts scattered around the isle. When she wasn't with her father at the tannery, Ren was out along the shoreline, looking for critters to satisfy her curiosity. She would see firelizards there every once in a while, and even collected rockmites and spiderclaws to draw them closer. She was entranced by the behavior of the creatures of the shore, especially the firelizards, but she also became very fond of the few runners and heardbeasts the Hold was home to. This all proved to make the decision to become a Herdcrafter surprisingly easy. She was already fifteen by the time all the decisions and preparations were made, and Renalys decided to hold off through the warm winter on Ista Island before heading out for the dock that would take her to the mainland in early spring.
Her farewell to her father was bittersweet, but Ren was soon overtaken with all of the possibilities and experiences in front of her. The voyage did not take very long, but once on the mainland, Ren met up with a trader caravan that would eventually make it's way to Keroon's BeastCraft Hall. It was a long trek, but Ren made herself useful by helping the traders take care of their runners and other beasts whenever they would let her. She made friends with the children aboard the caravan, but she made sure not to get too attached, for after they made their way to Kerron, there was a good chance she wouldn't see them for turns, if at all. Finally, upon their arrival, Renalys gave a quick, but utmost sincere, thank you and goodbye to the traders and rushed off towards the Beastcraft Hall.
Personality
Renalys is quite the laid back individual, and enjoys thinking logically instead of emotionally. This might make some think of her as cold and sometimes rude, but she really couldn't care less. She's honest to the point of irritation, but the friends that she does happen to make appreciate the fact that they can always get a straight answer from her. This isn't to say she won't lie if it'll spare her some trouble, but if she does happen to find herself in a position where she's facing reprimand, Ren has most likely already weighed the pros and cons of her decisions and is ready to accept the consequences.
In general, Ren is fairly lazy when it comes to general chores and mundane tasks. However, if she's put to a task, she'll eventually get it done. This is especially true if the task is given to her by an individual she has a great deal of respect for, which is a fairly difficult standard to achieve when it comes to Renalys. The only other exception to her laziness is any responsibility having to do with beasts, being it cleaning out runner stalls or chasing the tunnelsnakes out of storage sheds. This stems from her intense love and fascination with the creatures of Pern, which fuels her unwavering desire to become a MasterHerder.
