Lenaris

Description

Lenaris is a rather unremarkable young woman, standing just shy of five and a half feet. Most of her features can be described as plain; her hair, straight and dirty brown, is usually plaited back into a thick braid when it isn't left free to hang about the lines of her oval-shaped, high cheekboned face. Her complexion is tanned from hours spent living in the south; her build, best described as skinny and waif-like, womanly curves more attributed to muscle and the curvature of womanhood than anything else. Her eyes are rather at odds with the rest of her with pale, gray-green irises not unlike the sea; her hands and feet already appear work-roughened, nails chipped in places and not terribly shapely in others.

She wears simple enough attire: a tunic of sea-blue adorns her torso, hem covering the waistline of a simple, dark-gray skirt. When she isn't barefoot, she's wearing worn, brown sandals or, if the weather calls for it, an equally worn pair of boots. About her neck rests a necklace of coral-tinted shells, strung on a thin string or bit of ribbon.

History

Lenaris was born to a pair of cotholders near Honshu, but spent much of her youth going back and forth between her rather sheltered home and her mother's family at Island River Hold. A shy, somewhat gullible child, she certainly had her share of childhood idols and escapades. This was tolerated up until she turned ten, when her parents tried to get her to find some sort of task that she enjoyed doing. She did reasonably well with mending and alterating clothes, could make a somewhat passable stew and was versed enough in childcare as her younger siblings began to come along, but found nothing that particularly struck her fancy. So, at eleven, her father took her to Honshu, hoping that the idea of learning to do /something/ as well as a posted crafter might lend the girl some inspiration.

At Honshu, Lenny met all sorts of people who astounded her - including someone near her own age who displayed an incredible amount of attitude that flabbergasted the quiet, meek girl. Leslyn's "important father" was a topic well touted by the children of the Weyrhold and about as popular as someone finding that a small item or two of theirs had just gone missing. Confused and unable to understand the other child's behavior, Lenaris kept her head down, focused on working with the crafters as her father had told her to do, and was surprised to find that the bratty girl was also quite good at mending and working with garments. With one set of parents glad that their daughter was finally settling on a skill and the other finding their daughter's choice of career not-so-acceptable — the two somehow became friends once Lenny got up the courage to start talking.

Two turns passed, then three; Lenaris eventually returned home to help with her now large family of six and Leslyn joined her father at Ista. Communication between the two remained largely infrequent, but Lenny held out hope that they might run into one another again someday. After she turned nineteen and marriage began to be mentioned as a suitable start of life for her, she begged her parents to let her go somewhere else to hone her skills, somewhere where she could be exposed to more people who could teach her a bit more about making this sort of hem or making those kinds of gathers in a skirt. So she returned to Honshu for a couple of turns, but found herself largely unhappy without any real friends or the courage to put forth social skills to acquire some. Remembering that Leslyn was at Ista - or at least, that was the last that she had heard of her - she took a chance and made the first risky venture of her life. When a transport rider came by to drop off some parcels, Lenaris requested passage back to Ista with the brownrider, even though she was quaking from head to toe. Her parents were less than pleased when they found /this/ out, but reluctantly, they agreed that she could stay there for a short period, figuring that it would increase her chances of marriage as long as she didn't get /too/ mixed up with the Weyr's more free lifestyle.
