Description

It's the hair that tends to catch the eye first. Cut into a carefully layered, delicately feathered bob, the sable locks are clearly fastidiously well cared for - no human has hair that's naturally /that/ glossy. Chirisile might easily be mistaken as younger than her seventeen years, in part thanks to her height: she barely reaches 5'3" in her bare feet, and her round face and big almond eyes don't help the impression. Built along boyish lines, the teenager's few feminine curves are rather understated. Her face is dominated by a rounded nose and dark eyes, with a rather small mouth and nearly nonexistent chin. There's a pleasant honey undertone to her complexion, though, unfortunately for her, it tans poorly: sunburned streaks regularly run along her cheekbones and down her nose.

History

 Childhood at the Seacraft Hall 

You know that old saying about a sailor with a girl at every port? In her heyday, Chirisile's mother, Sialene, /was/ that girl at Tillek Hold, for quite a number of men. The pretty, easygoing daughter of seacrafters, Sialene parlayed her position as a tavern worker into a long and varied string of conquests, often to the disapproval of holders with more hidebound expectations about sexuality. Eventually, as so often happens, her roving ways caught up with her: at age 20 Sialene found herself a new mother. Uncertain about her child's precise parentage, the bartender picked the 'chi' and the 'ri' in the little girl's name from the two likeliest candidates. The matter's never been cleared up; Chiri stopped letting herself worry about it turns ago.

Although Sialene is a sweet woman, and her daughter is very fond of her, she's never been terribly interested in parenting. Which is probably just as well, since she's no good at it: to her, her daughter is a cute living doll to play dress-up with, or a friend to whisper secrets to. Fortunately for Chiri, Sialene is also self-aware enough to recognize her flaws as a parental figure, and fostered her daughter out with her sister Leneyit, an assistant Headwoman at the Seacraft Hall, and brother-in-law Berim, a fisherman.

Chirisile thus grew up under her aunt and uncle's firm management. On the whole, it was not a bad arrangement. A high-strung girl, from a very young age Chiri has been prone to neuroses, with mercurial emotions and a restless need to impose order on the world around her. Her practical aunt and uncle had no qualms about providing shape to their niece's day, especially because Chiri was fully willing to take more than her fair share of chores - after all, if she did it, she would know it would be done /right/.

 Star Craft Apprentice 

While Chirisile's inclination as a child was to follow in her aunt's footsteps and help in Hall management, she was encouraged by her relatives to apprentice to the Seacraft instead when she was thirteen. The craft proved, alas, of mediocre interest to her - except for one part. Chiri /loved/ calculating navigational charts. So much so, in fact, that an elderly Starcrafter journeyman posted to the Hall, Qasim, took an interest in her, and asked if she wouldn't like to switch to his more analytical, less fishy field. Once it was established that she could study with Qasim and not have to leave her relatives in Tillek, Chirisile happily swapped crafts.

For two and a half turns, she studied the Starcraft under the elderly journeyman's diligent tutoring. It's not necessarily easy for her - as much as she genuinely enjoys doing sums, she's not really naturally talented at mathematics - but Chiri's the sort of person who relishes a good hard slog, anyway.

Her settled world has recently been upended. Reluctant to face another cold Tillek winter, Qasim - in his late sixties, with arthritis - finally decided he'd had enough, and requested a transfer to some warmer, pleasanter clime. Chirisile dithered about what she would do for multiple sevendays. She didn't really /want/ to leave Tillek and her family, but she also didn't want to study under Qasim's replacement - she's very attached to the old man. Finally, and with some gentle pushes from her aunt, uncle, and mother, the apprentice decided to follow her instructor down to Ista Weyr.
